Hoka! Coffee Company: Indigenous from the Ground to the Cup by Matt Remle

The Native American owned and operated coffee company, Hoka!, based on the Pine Ridge Reservation is looking to take their coffee on the road with a Mobile Coffee Shop!

The Hoka! Coffee Company, was founded in 2013 by Sharice Davids (Ho-Chunk). Her goals were to create a roasting company on Pine Ridge that provides both jobs and economic growth for the community, as well as, purchase their beans from indigenous farms that guarantee fair labor and working conditions. Hence their slogan “Indigenous from the Ground to the Cup.”

Hoka! Coffee currently works with indigenous farmers from Peru, the Tzotzil and Tzeltal indigenous peoples from Chiapas Mexico, and the Bugisu peoples from Uganda.

The Hoka! Coffee Company has made their presence felt at various tribal functions and gatherings selling their coffee, as well as, selling their coffee to various wholesale customers like the Crazy Horse Memorial gift shop. You can also purchase their coffee, whole bean or ground, at http://hokacoffee.com/

Recognizing the need to need to bring their coffee to the masses, Pine Ridge is the size of Delaware and Rhode Island combined making access to their coffee limited, Hoka! Coffee has launched a campaign to put their coffee shop on wheels!

Growing up in the Northwest, and living in Seattle, dubbed the coffee capital of the world, it goes without saying that I LOVE coffee especially good coffee. When I heard about the Hoka! Coffee Company, I was pretty excited to support a Native owned and operated company, so I purchased their dark roast on-line and it did not disappoint.
