On Indigenous Peoples Day, Lakota hip hop artist Frank Waln released a new music video titled “Wokiksuye” featuring Marie Waln (his Grandmother) & Kodi DeNoyer.
In an interview with Teen Vougue Waln states, “The song’s title and hook are, in Lakota, ‘Wokiksuye,’ which means ‘remembrance,’” he said. “‘Wokiksuye Mi Oyate’ means “remembrance of my nation’; ‘Wokiksuye Mi Tiwahe’ means ‘remembrance of my family.’ It’s really important to remember who you are, where you came from, and those who came before you.”
The video was filmed on the Pine Ridge reservation, as well as, conceived, directed and filmed by youth from Pine Ridge.
I normally don’t like rap music, but i liked yours!! We need more of this from the rez, we need to unite!
