The Trump Administration has released its proposed budget for Fiscal Year 2020. For the third year in a row, the President’s budget would slash or eliminate funding to many federal programs that support tribal housing development.

The proposal would reduce the Indian Housing Block Grant to only $600 million, which is the same level of funding tribes received in 1998 when the Native American Housing Assistance and Self Determination Act was first enacted. Other programs, such as the Indian Community Development Block Grant and the United States Department of Agriculture Single Family Housing Direct Loan Program, would be eliminated altogether.

This budget is just the first step in a long process however, and Congress ultimately decides how much funding federal programs receive. NAIHC will work with members of Congress to ensure that these budget cuts are not implemented. National American Indian Housing Council encourages all of its members to work with their Congressional delegations to make sure tribal housing programs are adequately funded.
